WHRO FM On-Air Personalities: Lynn Summerall

Lynn SummerallA native of Norfolk, Lynn grew up in Baltimore where he studied music at the Peabody Conservatory and earned a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts from Towson State University.  He then went on to work on the  management staffs of Center Stage, the Maryland Ballet, and a chamber orchestra unit of the Baltimore Symphony.

During his time as a concert producer for the American Theatre in L’Enfant Plaza, Washington DC, he presented such disparate artists as Emmy Lou Harris, John Hartford, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Olatunji, Guy Lombardo, and the legendary early punk rock band, the New York Dolls.

His “New York Period” included a marketing assignment at the Metropolitan Opera and assisting Tony-winning Broadway director Joe Layton on musicals, ballets and TV shows, plus concerts at Radio City Music Hall.

He came to WHRO in 1990 as a classical music announcer.  Shortly afterward he formed the 1920s-style big band known as the Hotel Paradise Roof Garden Orchestra, which he still conducts today.

From 2000 to 2012 Lynn Summerall served as Coordinator of Volunteers for WHRO TV and FM. He also managed WHRO’s Voice for the Print Handicapped, a closed-circuit radio station for the blind. Now retired from his full-time WHRO responsibilities, Lynn has returned to classical announcing on the Sunday Musical Brunch, and substitutes occasionally for the other announcers.

Among his very best friends is Bill Bailey, a well-fed beagle whom he met through the kindness of Heather Mazzoni, WHRO’s Content Officer.
